Call the Fashion Police: Disgruntled Gucci Ex-Employee Shuts Down Servers; Loss of $200,000 in Productivity Costs

April 4, 2011 – 1:21 am

The world of luxury and fashion is, in many ways, alien to us regular human beings. Beyond watching repeats of Project Runway, most of us do not get exposed to the inner-working of the fashion industry. While the world of fashion is something that many of us view from afar, one thing recently happened that made the industry seem a bit, well, human.

A disgruntled, former IT worker for the U.S. division of Gucci sought revenge by shutting shut down servers and deleting data causing damage and lost productivity costs estimated at $200,000 in the process.

Here are some more details about this incident from The Register:

Gucci lost access to documents and email for nearly 24 hours, while other documents and emails were permanently lost. The attack relied on the use of a fictitious VPN access account allegedly established by Yin while still on Guccis payroll.

3 Year Old’s Identity Stolen To Buy Porn

April 2, 2011 – 4:59 pm

A thief hacked into a woman’s checking account and used her daughter’s name on an electronic check to pay for an online porn subscription. The FBI believes this is a relatively new scam, with reports coming in from across the country.

The little girl isn’t a signer on the account, but the bank cashed the check for $29.95 made out to a porn company in her name.

“Somebody took money from me, somebody took my account number, somebody used my daughter’s name for porn,” the mother says.

According to the Colorado Banker’s Association, “any company you send a check to has enough information to steal from you… Online bill pay isn’t any safer because criminals have been known to hack into computers.”

That’s a serious statement from a bank representative. I can’t help but wonder if it was translated correctly? She went on to note that many checks were being cashed for small amounts, which doesn’t send a red flag to banks.

Consumers often overlook these smaller transactions, or “microcharges,” which are fraudulent charges ranging from 20 cents to $10. The victims of this particular

Hacker Targets Maine State Parks; What Would Leslie Knope Do?

April 1, 2011 – 10:39 am

Recently we did a post about GE being targeted by hackers, which automatically made us ponder what Jack Donaghy, Alec Baldwins fictional character on NBCs 30 Rock, would do to fix this issue.  Well, we guess that since he is playing the Cable Town game these days, probably not much.  Though another data breach made us think of another pop culture reference.

Thanks to a vulnerability exposed by the third-party company that manages the online state park pass purchases for Maine State Parks, those who bought park passes online last year may have had their credit card information exposed. Thankfully, so far theres been no evidence of fraudulent charges on the exposed cards, and the Department of Conservation has sent out notices to 970 credit card holders in Maine.

So, how would Leslie Knope, the fictional character played brilliantly by Amy Poehler on the NBC show Parks and Recreation, handle this data breach?  Since she is very passionate about serving the people of Pawnee, Indiana, she would have mostly likely fallen on her sword and taken the blame. Sh
