Child Identity Theft: Stealing Kid’s Futures
July 10, 2011 – 12:26 am
Without a doubt crimes against children are truly the most loathsome. By their nature, children are considered innocent and do not have the tool and knowledge to properly defend themselves. Thankfully, the Federal Trade Commission is taking steps to address the topic of child identity theft by hosting a public forum called Stolen Futures: A Forum on Child Identity Theft” tomorrow at the FTC Conference Center in Washington, D.C.
The ITAC blog was fortunate enough to spend sometime with a couple of the event’s panelists over the past couple of weeks. First, we spoke with Professor Daniel Hatcher, University of Baltimore Law School, who provided some key insights into how foster children are often the most impacted and that state agencies need to do more to provide protection.
Then, we did a podcast with Anne Wallace, President of ITAC, the Identity Theft Assistance Center and Steven A. Schwartz, Executive Vice President, Consumer Services at Intersections, who discussed ways to protect children from this emerging issue.
Finally, both Ms. Wallace and Mr. Schwartz were featured in a FoxNews.com story last week about child identity theft and the FTC event.
So, clearly child identity theft is a major issue we applaud any organization or individual that is taken steps to protect the most innocent in our society: the children.
